Kathleen Newell

Kathleen Newell joined the council team in April 2017 as an Education Program Manager. Kathleen is a graduate of Bloomsburg University, receiving a B.A. in Criminal Justice with a career concentration in Family, Children, and Youth. Prior to joining the Council, Kathleen served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in South Africa, working as a Community HIV/AIDS Outreach Worker with a focus on health education and youth development. Most recently, Kathleen worked as part of Peace Corps South Africa’s programming team, training new health and education volunteers, and she acted as a consultant for maternal, adolescent, and child health projects. Her career prior to serving in the Peace Corps was in the field of litigation consulting.

Kathleen has also volunteered as a literacy tutor for English-language-learning immigrants. In addition to her service in South Africa, her international experiences include travels throughout much of Southern Africa and parts of Eastern and Northern Africa. As a 2018 and 2019 Awardee of the YALI Mandela Washington Reciprocal Exchange Component, Kathleen recently traveled to Malawi to implement youth programs addressing gender-based violence and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Kathleen is excited to be part of the team at the World Affairs Council, and she looks forward to engaging with local students and teachers and exploring the diversity of the Greater Pittsburgh Area.
